By about dinnertime, Ben started to go a bit downhill. He was breathing pretty heavily and just looked a little bit out of it while trying to eat dinner. The doctor said he would get worse the next day, but had been acting so great all morning that we thought maybe she was wrong. Unfortunately, we were wrong. We did one of the breathing treatments to try and open up his airways before bed and then just waited. We tried to have a nice dinner, but Ben would cry about every 30-45 minutes so we ate in shifts (like the old days!). We had a bit of cake, then Ben woke up again and I noticed he was grunting a bit with each breath and he was really retracting a lot (stomach pushing out, skin sucking in to see his ribs when he breathed). Those were two signs the doctor said to watch for so we called the nurse and she said to head to the ER. They called our name right away at the ER and said he was getting 100% of his oxygen, but he was definitely retracting (working hard to do it) and they didn't like it, so we spent the next 3 hours with Ben in the ER. They mostly monitored him, but also did a few breathing treatments and cleared out his sinuses with long tubes (so hard to watch). He was looking a lot better, so we thought we could go home but they wanted to watch him over night, so we were admitted to the hospital at about 1am.
Ben did so great in the hospital - he pretty much slept all night in the metal crib and his oxygen level stayed at about 98% the whole time. The next day he was run down, but seemed in good spirits and even took a 2-hr nap in the metal hospital crib again. At that point, they told us we could go home. I can't believe what a brave little boy we have.
