First Soccer Season (SMYS) - Go Cobras!

This fall we signed Ben up for his first "real" season of soccer. He had participated in Soccer Shots at his pre-school, but it was mostly just learning a few skills and having fun. This time around would be a bit more serious with uniforms, practices, and actual games.  We knew Ben liked playing soccer, but Jim and I really had no idea what to expect when it came to playing in a game and against other kids and listening to a coach.  So we signed him up and just went into it with an open mind, just hoping he'd at least stay on the field and try to participate. :)

Shortly before the season was supposed to start, we got a phone call saying they were short on coaches and Ben might not be able to play if we didn't have a coach.  With a lot of hesitation, we agreed that Jim would HELP coach - we knew Ben would not pay as much attention, listen as well, etc if Jim was coaching, but we wanted him to be able to play.  Jim showed up at the coach's meeting to find out that he was going to be the HEAD coach and I ended up being the team parent.  So we ended up being much more involved than we anticipated (finding a team sponsor, getting a banner, snack schedules, planning practices, setting up fields, etc), but it worked out great in the end and we all enjoyed it.

Ben had good days and bad days when it came to soccer.  We had a lot of crying, leaving the field, getting hurt (he was one of the smallest ones out there), not really paying attention, and trying to talk to Jim when he was trying to coach.  But we also had times when he was having a great time and dribbling the ball and he even scored a time or two!  The best part was meeting the great kids and parents on our team - it was fun seeing everyone every Saturday and we will always remember our first season as a COBRA!
