We were definitely bummed that this was the first year in a long time that we weren't either in Cape Cod with Jim's family or at my parent's house with my sister and her family in town. But we were ready to have a great weekend anyway, starting with a party at my co-worker's house on the 4th. We had been talking about it for a couple of weeks because he has a son Ben's age and they were going to swim together and play Star Wars all day long. :)
But then Ben got sick. He woke up Friday morning feeling fine, but quickly went downhill. By breakfast, he was saying he was super tired and didn't want to eat his pancakes from Jack in the Box (that's when we knew something was definitely wrong!). So he went up and took a 2-hour nap at 9.30am! He woke up with a 102 fever. We were so sad that this had to happen on the 4th, but kept getting ready for the party, hoping it would pass (I think we were in denial). He would have small bursts of energy and play, but then was back on the couch feeling horrible. After a couple of hours, he started throwing up so we knew he was out for the party. Oliver and I headed to the party for a couple of hours to say hello to everyone (and get us away from the virus). We had fun, but obviously it wasn't quite the same. Ben did muster up the energy to go up on the hill behind our house and watch a few fireworks at night.
The next day, Ben woke up feeling absolutely fine so we figured it was just a 24-hour stomach bug and spent Saturday baby-proofing the house - moving all the toys with small parts to the living room and moving the baby-type toys to the family room, throwing away some old toys, etc. Ben and Oliver were playing together all morning and it was adorable. That afternoon, we headed to Babies R Us to buy baby gates and Ben was complaining that his mouth really hurt. That's when I remembered Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease had just gone through an entire classrom at Ben's school. Oh man. We looked into Ben's mouth that night and could see little red and white dots/sores. Great, he probably had it and worse, he was contagious all day with Oliver.
We tried our best to keep Oliver and Ben separated the rest of the weekend, but it's so hard with 2 kids. Ben actually felt fine (minus a sore mouth) so we headed to the beach on Sunday. We had such a great time. It was the first time Oliver felt the ocean with his feet and we really just let him go to town in the sand. Now that he is scooting around, there was no way to keep him sitting on a towel or blanket. He wanted to get to the sand (and eat it of course). Actually, it started with him taking a face plant right into the sand (he was sitting on the blanket but fell forward right into the sand) - we just let him get covered after that. :)
First feel of the ocean
This sums up my boys - Ben jumping with excitement and Oliver just along for the ride :)

Ben and Jim out in the waves
Ben is so light, the waves take his feet out from under him!
It turned out to be a pretty great weekend, minus the sickness and Ben and Jim missing the party on the 4th. I took Ben to the Dr. on Monday and he confirmed it was Hand, Foot, and Mouth - but a mild case - thank goodness. He only got a few little red dots on his hands and feet. But, as to be expected, Oliver started running a fever Monday night. He got it as well, a little worse than Ben, but still not too bad - we had one bad day when he had a fever all day long and just wanted to be held and a couple of rough nights. And then he broke out with a few blisters on his toes and fingers. That was our first experience with that virus - and hopefully our last.
